Duplicate this structure and slide them together.
1979-10-00-Penny14.jpg

Carefully filling the space between with pennies, we create a one penny-span bridge.
1979-10-00-Penny15.jpg

Repeating the process by putting an extra triad on top of each stack, we can create a two penny-span bridge.
1979-10-00-Penny16.jpg

Although it looks weak, it will actually hold quite a bit of weight. Remember no glue or adhesive is used; only the compression weight of the pennies hold the structures together.

We can move on to a three penny-span bridge.
1979-10-00-Penny18.jpg

And finally to six and seven penny-span bridges. These are highly effective study-avoidance mechanisms.

Click "Next" to move on to "The Big Tower".

We are ready to build a big coin stack.

Then build upwards.

Oddly enough, it's sturdy enough to hold some pretty weighty books.

Then when it's all done, put a dome on the top.

And then the flash went out. To demolish the tower, I took a necklace, wrapped it around a pillar and gave a tug.
TowerWithChain.jpg

Against all expectation, it still stood.

Here's a closeup of the damage done.

At last I removed an opposite pillar and the whole structure came down.

Besides bridges, hollow domes are fairly easy to build.

OK, on to other things. Here is a simple spiral often seen at your local bookstore when the nightshift has way too much time on their hands.

Pyramids are fairly mundane, but at least they keep the razor blades in the drawers beneath incredibly sharp. These are not hollow inside.

I hope you have enjoyed my visit down memory lane with pennies. It just shows what a bored student with some common cents can do. (sorry).

The following picture was my first slide in the presentation. It from the old days when pterodactyls still roamed the skies, (presentations these days are a little easier with PowerPoint - but lack the character of hand drawn slides).

Next, we'll enjoy pictures that people like you have emailed me.
